If you’re like me, you may be a little bit concerned about some of the ingredients in the skincare products you use. I have dry skin and I love using moisturizers, but our skin is a massive organ, and I have worries about slathering it with harmful chemicals. The skin absorbs what we put on it and after looking into specifics about what sorts of things skincare products are made with, I made some changes. Check out this website for great info on what your favourite products are made with.
I started by making this homemade body butter because I trust the ingredients 100%. Coconut oil is natural, and an amazing moisturizer for face and body. I can use this body butter daily without worrying about any harmful ingredients toxifying my body. This recipe is so easy to put together, and absolutely worth it. Body butters from stores can be so pricey, and they almost always have icky ingredients!!
You can really play around with this recipe by using the oils of your choice (just keep the solid-liquid ratio correct, which is 75% solid to 25% liquid), and by adding skin-safe essential oils and add-ins, like vanilla or lavender.
If you are wondering about where to get ingredients like coconut oil or shea butter, I buy mine from Mountain Rose Herbs.
**If you want your body butter to be scented with vanilla, be sure to strain out the vanilla bean seeds while the mixture is still in it’s liquid form. Well, unless you want to be as cool as me and have little black specks all over you…….Better yet just throw in a whole vanilla bean and remove it later!
Homemade Body Butter (adapted from here)
- 1 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1 vanilla bean
Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Add vanilla bean. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes. Stir in olive oil and other ‘flavourings’. Wait until oils start to partially solidify and remove vanilla bean. Whip until a butter-like consistency is achieved. This may take several minutes, even in a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer with the whip attachment. Place in a clean, glass jar.
