Apple Chips
I’ve been very busy lately and it is way too easy to not eat for a long time, and then eat whatever is easiest/fastest to grab. We all know that that usually ends up being more processed/junky foods. My plan lately has been to make a healthy meal but with leftovers that will last for one or two more meals so I can have a quick lunch during the day. Keeping healthy snacks on hand is also great, so I don’t look up from work and realize I haven’t eaten in hours! These apple chips are a great little snack to have and very easy to make. I have kept them raw by dehydrating them at 115 degrees F. Don’t worry too much about that if you don’t have a dehydrator!
I got my dehydrator at Canadian Tire and it’s great for beginners, just getting into dehydrating. If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can definitely still make these by using your oven on its lowest temperature until they are crispy. You want to make sure all the moisture is gone so that they last longer, and don’t get soggy while in storage. You can keep these apple chips in a sealed tupperware container.
I have used coconut sugar, but I’m sure that maple syrup or raw honey would work just as well. This will make your whole house smell like apple pie, while they dehydrate!
Apple Chips
- 3 medium Granny Smith apples
- juice of 1 lemon
- 3 Tbsp coconut sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil, melted
- a pinch of sea salt
Slice apples very thin, using a mandolin. Toss with remaining ingredients until evenly coated. Place on non-stick dehydrator trays (*Mine took 7-8 round trays) until crispy. If you want these to be considered “raw”, do not go over 115 degrees F. They will take about 4+ hours at that temperature. You can speed things up by going higher if you aren’t concerned about them being raw. Alternatively, place on silpat lined baking tray and bake until crisp in the oven at it’s lowest temperature.
On another note, have you heard of The Gaslight Anthem? They are one of my favourite bands- maybe because they embody some of my favourite music, drawing inspiration from punk rock like The Ramones and The Clash, and mixing it up with these crazy awesome Bruce Springsteen vibes. Check them out if you haven’t already. I went to their concert last week and they sound absolutely amazing live. I got to meet Benny and Alex from the band. If you dig their sound, be sure to catch them live when they hit your city!!
