  • DIY Halloween Mermaid Crown

I just thought I would step outta the kitchen for a minute and into the arts and crafts zone because Halloween is coming up! If you’re unsure of what to be…a mermaid could be a fun costume. Or better yet, a hooked mermaid! This was such a fun costume to make, that I used it two years in a row! That is almost a sin for me as I have so much fun dressing up and making costumes but I just loved this crown so much I had to use it more than once! Sadly I left it in a taxi while I stopped for pizza before I made my…

  • Adult Capri Sun Strawberry Limeade

    DIY Adult Capri Sun

Remember those little silver juice boxes you used to love as a kid that were more bag than box? I’m talking about Capri Suns! I don’t know about you but these were the king of all when it came to lunchtime trading in elementary school. Not much trumped a Capri Sun. I wanted to make something fun that would take us all down memory lane for my birthday last year and remind us of the good ol’ days. So I made some DIY Capri Suns…with a twist. I bought some tall and narrow resealable bags on Amazon because they suited the shape of a Capri Sun better than a standard ziplock…

  • How to Make Natural Food Colouring – Recipe for Raw Cheesecake Included!

With Easter just around the corner, I know there will be a lot of egg decorating, and plenty of delicious cookies, cupcakes, and sweets made. I got to thinking about how much food colouring must be used over the course of this holiday to make all of those pastel colours. I’m going to guess a lot of Red # 40 and Yellow #5. I know ya’ll know how much crap these colours contain. In addition to known carcinogens, their consumption has been linked to hyperactivity in children. They add no nutritional value to our food, and they are detrimental to our health. Now  I want to make a genuine effort…

  • Ombre Cake | Koko's Kitchen

    Ombré Cake

The other day I had the opportunity to make a “The Little Prince” inspired cake for a client’s baby shower. I wasn’t familiar with this story book but after some googling I found that deep blues and golden stars seemed to be the colour scheme of this story. I thought an ombré cake would be suiting with colours that fade from a deep royal or navy blue into white…but I had never decorated a cake like that before. It’s always a bit scary to try out a new technique on a client’s cake but I was so pleased with the final product and I can’t wait to make another ombré…

  • Koko Brill | Koko's Kitchen | Delhi, India

India – Part One – Delhi

I just got back from a 2-week vacation in India and it was unbelievable. I went with a bunch of my bestest friends as well as my boyfriend to see our best friend Taylor get married. What an amazing experience!! We flew into Delhi on a direct flight from Vancouver…which equates to 14 hours of hell when you can’t fall asleep on the plane! We took a bus to Tender Heart NGO in Faridabad, the school we would be staying at for the first week of our trip. Taylor had volunteered at Tender Heart for ‘6 weeks’ a couple of years ago. ‘6 weeks’ quickly turned into 6 months and…

  • Drop Dead Recipes- Caramel Almond Popcorn

It’s that time of year! Halloween is just around the corner and those mini-chocolate bars get so freakin’ tempting, don’t they? Once you start you just can’t stop, so don’t even go near those suckers, and instead make a REFINED SUGAR and CORN SYRUP FREE Caramel Almond Popcorn to munch on instead! I am absolutely pumped about the flavour of this popcorn. To be honest, I don’t even like caramel popcorn, but everyone is going crazy about this one. It’s sweetened with coconut sugar and maple syrup, and has great healthy fats from coconut oil and almond butter. Forget the candy thermometer and a complicated caramel process- this comes together…

  • Vegan Poutine

    Plant-Based Poutine

Canada Day is coming up on July 1st, so I thought I’d come up with a little tribute to a classic Canadian dish – poutine. For those of you unfamiliar with this delicacy, it consists of french fries, gravy, and melted cheese curds. Maybe it sounds strange- but I promise, it’s delicious! I changed things up (obviously…) and baked french fries, with a plant-based “mozzarella” and a miso gravy that I could literally drink straight from the bowl. Depending on how many potatoes you use, you may have some leftover gravy. I love this gravy on Buddha bowls, or with roasted veggies! Gravy: 2 Tbsp coconut oil 1 medium onion,…

  • Drop Dead Recipes | Koko's Kitchen | Drop Dead Clothing | Vegan Mint Chocolate Ice Cream

Drop Dead Recipes- Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

For this month’s #dropdeadrecipes series I have made some delicious plant-based mint chocolate chip ice cream. I was so stoked at how the flavour of this turned out. Considering it uses a coconut milk base, along with spirulina to tint it green, it is quite different from my old favourite mint chocolate chip ice cream. Those who have tried this can agree that it tastes just like the “real” thing. I think it tastes even better- no chemicals, preservatives, or dairy-induced stomach ache! The thing about this ice cream is that it is best served as a soft-serve, or gelato texture. I like to freeze it for only 1-2 hours,…

  • Chocolate-4

Drop Dead Recipes- Raw Chocolate Bark

Well…I’m BACK IN VANCOUVER! I can’t believe a year had passed since I began my working holiday in New Zealand. It’s been an epic and unforgettable trip- I will always cherish my memories of this year! It’s good to be home though. I’ve missed my kitchen…A LOT. I literally ecstatic to get crackin’ on some new recipes and finish my e-book. I’m looking to print a few copies of it, too, so that’s exciting! In the meantime, I’m going to lay back and enjoy the Christmas holidays! And you know that means plenty of cooking and baking. This recipe for Drop Dead Clothing is alllllll about the chocolate. Not just…

  • Caramel Apples | Koko's Kitchen

Drop Dead Recipes- Caramel Apples – No Corn Syrup!!

It’s October! I bet you all are well into Fall in the Northern Hemisphere- pumpkin spice, leaves on the ground, Halloween not too far away and of course, Canadian Thanksgiving. Well I’m in the midst of a month-long road trip to the South Island of New Zealand! Rhys and I will be doing a 4-day hike, and taking part in all the adventure that Queenstown has to offer. We will be visiting Christchurch, doing some whale watching and so much more! It happens that we will be travelling in the van on October 31st…so I think for the first year ever, I won’t be dressing up. I LOVE dressing…

  • Drop Dead Recipes- Vegan Sugar Cookies

It’s that time of yeaaaaaaaaaaar!! I just wanna curl up and watch Christmas Vacation and ELF!! Christmas is one of my fav times of the year and I am a little sad to be ‘missing it’ this year. By missing it I mean I won’t be at home for Christmas, as I arrive in New Zealand on Christmas Eve. I do look forward to meeting a lot of new people and spending Christmas with Rhys’ family and friends, in the sunshine. It will be a different Christmas, that’s for sure. In the meantime, I want to take full advantage of Christmas festivities while I’m in still in Vancouver so that…
