    Guacamole For Justice

A long long time ago…(I’ve had this post on the back burner for about 2 years. Oops!) my bestest friend Erika invited me to a fundraising event that her geography class was putting on called “Guacamole For Justice”. I was intrigued by the guacamole (obviously…!) and also intrigued about what a guacamole cooking lesson could be bringing justice to. The event itself was awesome. I walked in and the place was absolutely packed, which was great to see. Long communal tables were set up with a ‘cooking station’ set up every few feet. There was a fun, interactive live cooking show on stage, and we got to whip up some…

  • How to Make Natural Food Colouring – Recipe for Raw Cheesecake Included!

With Easter just around the corner, I know there will be a lot of egg decorating, and plenty of delicious cookies, cupcakes, and sweets made. I got to thinking about how much food colouring must be used over the course of this holiday to make all of those pastel colours. I’m going to guess a lot of Red # 40 and Yellow #5. I know ya’ll know how much crap these colours contain. In addition to known carcinogens, their consumption has been linked to hyperactivity in children. They add no nutritional value to our food, and they are detrimental to our health. Now  I want to make a genuine effort…

  • Dealing with Anxiety Naturally

I don’t know if I have shared this before but I suffer from anxiety. It can be pretty intense in certain social or workplace situations. I think it had been going on for a large chunk of my life but I attributed it to “being shy” or something like that. It’s really only been this past year or two that I’ve come to realize that these thoughts and feelings I sometimes have are not ‘normal’ and are completely unnecessary. My anxiety manifests itself in crazy thoughts (jumping to conclusions, making generalizations and making assumptions), headaches, tummy aches and eventually feeling totally burnt out. Let’s face it…anytime you get super emotional…

  • Maple-Tahini Winter Salad

Gooooood morning everyone! It’s finally a nice, bright sunny morning in Vancouver and it gives me hope that one day this grey Winter may end… I have been craving citrus fruits and salads lately – weird! Perhaps it’s my body telling me that Spring is coming…and also that I’ve been on a bit of a ‘winter diet’ lately and could use a bit more fresh food. I’ve been lacking big time in the vitamin D department and the sun just makes me feel so happy and motivated. The weather in Van City has left me with dry skin, a cold that won’t go away and just a bit ‘blah’ feeling. I’ve…

  • Fuss-Free Vegan by Sam Turnbull

Helloooo friends! Let me tell you about my lovely friend Sam and her NEW COOKBOOK “Fuss-Free Vegan“. First of all, I met Sam a couple years ago when we filmed Star of the Show with Chef Michael Smith in Prince Edward Island. After our days of filming, we had some time to kill so Ethan of Food Bloggers of Canada, Sam and I went on a little excursion. It was endless laughs for the three of us and I am so glad we got to experience windy little P.E.I. together! Food blogging has allowed me to meet many awesome people and I’m so thankful for that! Apple Crumble ‘Cheesecake’ Bars with Martin’s Apple Chips

Allow me to introduce you to my new favourite, healthy snack – Martin’s Apple Chips! These are the tastiest apple chips and they are made in Canada by the very family that grows the apples. I used to make my own apple chips every so often and although I’m a fan of making things from scratch…some things are better left to professionals. Martin’s apple farm is located in Waterloo, Ontario and has gone from having 100 trees in 1971 to 700 acres in 2017. You could say they know what they’re doing. Learn all about their story here. Martin’s Apple Chips come in several different flavours – regular, cinnamon, caramel dream and chocolatey…

  • Koko & Flokie

    Meet Flokie, My New Puppy!

Excuse my absence lately but something major has happened — I got a puppy!!!!! I am dog-crazy and have been my entire life. The passing of my lovely doggy, Pepper, was hard to get over. I got her when I was 5 and had her for 18 years – she was family. In recent years, I have really been missing the presence of a furry friend and was waiting (im)patiently for the right time to bring another doggo into my life. I have been wolf and husky crazy since I was a little kid. I was always watching White Fang and Balto and pretending I had a pack of sled…

  • Que Pasa | Koko's Kitchen

Que Pasa Factory Tour with Food Bloggers of Canada

Last week I had the privilege of attending a first-ever tour at the Que Pasa factory along with Food Bloggers of Canada. I grew up on Que Pasa chips…my dad is an OG and has been eating these chips since they first started making them. But isn’t it cool to find out that something you love is even better than you thought? Since touring the factory with one of the company’s owners, I saw the love and care Que Pasa has put into the making of it’s products and the integrity they have when it comes to cutting no corners even though they are now such a large company. They…

  • Koko Brill | Eco Tan

    Eco Tan Invisible Tan

This weekend I went to Sephora looking for a new foundation amongst other things (hello Kat Von D tattoo liner!). Anyway, the lady that was helping me was so alarmed when she started testing products on my skin, she was all, “Oh wow…you’re like….really pale. Definitely the lightest colour in every palette….so pale. OMG.” Oh yeah thanks girl – I know! Obviously I “love the skin I’m in” but I’m also fully aware of how pale I am and sometimes I think it would be nice to have a little bronzed action on this ghostly skin in the summer hahaha. In comes Eco Tan to the rescue and this stuff…

  • Rhubarb Syrup

*This post is from 2012 but I wanted to re-share the rhubarb love* Well, I promised you one last rhubarb recipe for the season and here it is. It’s a goodie…..worth the wait 😉 This is a super simple rhubarb syrup- perfect for adding to a gin & tonic, vodka & lemonade or your favourite cocktail. Or, if you’re no fun, you could just make a nice alcohol-free pink lemonade with this. The flavour is light and sweet with a subtle rhubarb taste, not to mention how beautiful their light pink colour is. Add sunshine + friends + good music for extra enjoyment! A flavourful rhubarb syrup & how to…

    Whistler Train Wreck

On a recent trip to Whistler, I was able to cross something off my list that I had been wanting to do for a couple years  – hike to the ‘Whistler train wreck’. In years past it had been a bit of a secret and I’d tried to find it before but ended up in the completely wrong area. Now it’s become quite well known and a real trail has been created leading to the wreck. There is also a brand spankin’ new suspension bridge over the Cheakamus River right on the trail. Now this train wreck supposedly happened some time in the 1950s and what it looks like now…
